Understand French payroll

From gross to net: what is actually deducted

Gross salary is pay before employee contributions. Net before tax is what remains after those deductions; French withholding tax is then applied to an estimated taxable-net base.

01

The main employee contributions

The estimate includes old-age insurance, CSG-CRDS social levies, Agirc-Arrco supplementary pension, CEG and CET where applicable.

Some lines use France's Social Security ceiling and salary bands, so their amount is not always a flat percentage of gross pay.

02

Cadre and non-cadre status

Since the Agirc-Arrco schemes were unified, the main rates are shared. In this model, the direct statutory difference is the small Apec contribution paid by cadres.

Differences on an actual payslip often come from company health insurance, supplementary benefits or employer-specific agreements.

03

Before and after withholding tax

Your withholding rate depends on your household tax position and is supplied by the French tax authority. It cannot be reliably inferred from salary alone.

When entered, it is applied to estimated taxable net—not simply to net pay before tax.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What to know when comparing this estimate with a French payslip.

What percentage should I subtract from French gross pay?

A flat percentage is imprecise because several contributions are capped or banded. This calculator applies the main lines separately.

Why does the result differ from my payslip?

Collective agreements, health insurance, supplementary benefits, perks, bonuses, overtime and payroll regularisation can all change the actual result.

Is French withholding tax included?

Yes, when you enter your personal rate. It is applied to an estimate of taxable net pay.

Does this work for civil servants or self-employed workers?

No. This version is limited to private-sector employees in France who are under 65.

Is this an official calculation?

No. It uses rates from official sources but remains indicative and does not replace an actual payslip or the official Urssaf simulator.
